K-tel Knitter

Dear Crafty Friends,

I was recently at a thrift store and bought a bag of sewing notions. In it were two K-tel Knitters. Intrigued, I searched for them and found this and this . It's selling between $15 and $20 for the original packaging, yarn and 25 pattern book. I'm surprised.

Have you had any experience with it? Is it a pain to try? Any comments ? This looks like a good safe craft to take on the airplane. It looks like it was around in the mid-60's to early 70's

Signed,

Curious Knitter

EDITED-2014: There are some good sites shown on Google - this is one of the most comprehensive. I have never pursued the patterns, in fact after this post in 2007, I put them away and haven't seen them since.

I have a vague memory of hearing of this, but have never tried it. Looks interesting, though. I kind of like that you can cut it and it doesn't unravel. Do keep us posted. I found your second "this" to be an interesting site. I like some of the things she's made.

I know the k-tel knitter! My grandmother taught me how to use it when I was ...well, very small. It was the first instrument I used for stitching. Now I crochet and pretend to knit. :)

I'm looking for a k-tel knitter of my own and glad to see you found one in a thrift store. I'll leave my "yarn stores" alone for a while, hunting one down at the second-hand shops! Thanks!

Hi Veda - do you have any patterns or can you show me what you've made with it?
I'll keep my eyes peeled for another for you. Have you tried ebay?

I've tried yarn stores. I'll try other avenues now that I'm really fired up about it. :)

I don't have anything just now, but Mother might have a slipper in the only pattern I ever knew, that my Grandmother would likely have actually made. But I did make them as well. Trouble is I was knee-high to a grasshopper then!

Any new leads, I'll send your way.
-Thanks for stopping by my place.

i myself have used these to knit full faced fishing beanies bed sox and bedspreads. i think they are great and you can make your own needles of different sizes easily. As i had to,after losing the original needles=give them a try=after working out how to drop or add stitches, you can do all sorts of shapes.=by the way i am a Man.

Thank you for posting your comment Anonymous - did you make the patterns up yourself? I'd love to see how you did it.

I purchased one when I was 12 or 13 after hopelessly trying to knit and to crochet. Saw it on tv but it was called "one needle knitting" by some other company. I am 61 now and have used it ever since. It is quick and easy to modify patterns and stitches. I make beanie hats, rimmed hats, purses, scarves, blankets, sweaters, anything that you can make with knitting or crochet. I can use one line of yarn or several. I can use yarn or crochet thread. I have long since lost my needles so I just use a large yarn needle purchased at any yarn store - plastic needle. Some stitches are like knitting even to ribbing stitches for cuffs and collars other are like crochet even to very open stitches or long ones. Once you master the basic stitch and where the loops are almost anything is possible. Good luck with your adventure. Carol

Thank you Carol - I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I still haven't tried it - by now I've mis-placed it in my craft room, but you've inspired me to try it again since you've used it for so many years And I didnt' know it would be easy to alter patterns for it. Thanks for the information!

These are the only needles I use. I'm actually looking for more, mine are wearing out from years of use.

Hi
I just came across one of these from a thrift store but it did not have the instructions or patterns. I was wondering if anyone who has this would be willing to share how to do the different stitches
Thank you

Hello Bel B - this is the best source to get you started:
http://marniemaclean.com/words/htmls/ktel/ktel_basic.html

otherwise, you can google for patterns, etc.

After this post 7 years ago, I never pursued it anymore. Sorry

I was in high school when I got my needles. I am now almost 63. I still have one needle. I think I gave the other to my mom. I have made knitted hats, caps, and afgans with this product. Once you learn the basic stitches you can adapt patterns for the knitter. It is a lot easier to use than knitting and crochet needles.

Hi,
I came across one of the ktel knitter a few months ago. I actually had the instruction manual to it. Im very unsure to whether its still in my home or not. Anyone who comes across this site looking for the ktel knitter or the grants looper should contact me whether it is in interest to buy the ktel knitter or to help me figure out how to use it myself.

I have both the needles and the instruction booklet for the K- tel Knitter. I was given these a few years ago. About twelve years back I received a similar item called a 'Needle Looper' with its instruction booklet. I have been using it ever since. After breaking it several times, I took wooden dowels and made copies. I have sold a lot at craft shows. Recently a woman asked for a copy of the booklet. I made her a copy. On the box is written: Distributed in U.S.A. by Imperial Products, Inc., 421 Wilson St. N.E., Minneapolis, Minn. 55413. Since this product is now hard to find, the company may no longer exist. For any one who may be interested in getting this K-Tel Knitter with instruction booklet, I can send you my wooden copy with a copy of the booklet.

A few years ago I got the original K-Tel box with needles and booklet. About twelve years back I got another similar product called 'the Needle Looper' it had a similar booklet. After breaking the needle and ordering several from the company. I was no longer able to get more. The company listed on the box was Imperial Products, Inc., 421 Wilson St. N.E., Minneapolis, Minn. 55413. This company may no longer exist. Since I was no longer able to get more needles, I made copies using wooden dowels. I have been making throws, scarves and afghans for years. I have sold my copies of the 'The Looper' at craft shows. For any one interested in my copy of the needle and booklet, please let me know.

I have 3 of them and I make afghans all the time. Great little tools.
Enjoy! They're not easy to work with by following the instructions. Your best bet is to find someone who can teach you in person.
