Not a good night

Have you ever slept on a linoleum covered concrete floor in your house coat (bath robe? what do we call them these days)? Well that is what I did last night until around 3:00am when my hip bones were sore and I moved back to our bed.

"Why would anyone do that? " you ask. Well because I have an 11 year old dog who is very noise phobic and last night was a gorgeously clear night 6 days before Hallowe'en so it was FIRECRACKER CITY in my neighbourhood. And, despite 5 Valiums (vet prescribed) and a CD of Diana Krall (supposedly soothing) blasting away my dog was still freaking out while penned in her travel kennel (for every one's safety). Oh yes she did. She growled, she whined and then she'd bark and she was as relentless as those kids outside. So my only choice was to be in her view and threaten her with the spray bottle. Not how I'd like to treat my dog, but sadly the only thing that kept her quiet and at the risk of affecting my marriage, my only choice.

So. Now I am grumpy as all get out today and don't want to be near anyone or do anything. And my dog - well, you know animals... they happily start the new day with their tails wagging. No concept of the fact that we'll probably end up doing the exact same thing again tonight and the next 5 nights until Hallowe'en. This is why, for my sake, I am very happy when it rains on October 31st.

And if you've gotten this far..... thanks for reading this, that makes me feel a bit better.

I guess calling the cops is no help, or appealing to the parents of those kids (if you knew who they were). Going out and yelling at them would only provoke I'm sure. Although, no one should have to just sit back and take it. Could you maybe board the dog somewhere for a week or so? At a kennel or a friend's, in a more remote location? It's a terrible thing I know. Have lived through it. Unfortunately, cuddling and comforting the dog only reinforces the undesired behaviour, but what's a girl to do short of completely tranquilizing the poor animal every night. For your sake I hope it pours buckets every night for the next week.

awww! poor pup & poor you- she's lucky to have such a loving and caring mama... :))) and hopefully the rain comes and stops those darn firecrackers tonight.

Calling the cops doesn't help because the kids move too fast and it's often hard to identify them so by the time the cops arrive, the kids have moved on and the cops can't do anything about it. Going out there and yelling at them can be scary, last year one of the male neighbours tried that and they shot a roman candle directly at him (which zipped by him and into his hedge) Yes, I should have borded the dog - but you know, sometimes one doesn't always have the money for it.... however, perhaps it would have been better because after all the Tylenol I've taken and the Valium she's taken, perhaps it would've been cheaper! I must do that next year!Sorry you've had to live through it too - it's not fun. And no, you can't say it's okay because that makes them worse. Sadly, it seems that when I get mad at her and tell her to be quiet, that's actually better. That and locking her in the carrier. I don't like seeing my dog locked behind bars and I don't like yelling at her, but what can I do? Yup, next time she goes to a kennel.
Thanks for the sympathy, very much apprecaited! Wishing you both a Happy Halloween
