A Question About Peanut Butter

I was talking with my brother the other day about a bunny situation he's having. Some things have been moved and chewed in his yard. Bunny pellets have been found in the area and they are chewers but they are rather passive when it comes to moving things. So either his bunnies have banded together or formed a group like in Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit.  There is lots of backyard activity in his yard and so he's bought a motion activated outdoor camera to see what's really going on out there.

When we were discussing what to do to bait an area, I said "peanut butter". My sister-in-law wants to know "why is it that for all little animals (rats, mice, skunks, rabbits, etc) the  trap/bait the suggestion is peanut butter? Why do these animals like peanut butter when it doesn't occur naturally in the wild?"

Suggestions?

What I like bout peanut butter is that it will stick where you put it.. Don't know why the wild beasts like it. Maybe because they can find it? Ju-Jube candies don't occur in the wild - but they sure attract me..
