I was pretty frustrated on Sunday, not only because of the pain in my neck, but I felt like I wasted the whole day. I should have used the time for something creative or productive, but all I really got done this weekend was laundry and started felting some bowls. I hate wasted whole weekends. I am so glad this is a long weekend for us (Family Day) and hope to pack if full of accomplishments.
While I was resting my neck, I did catch several episodes of "the Incredible Dr. Pol" - I am amazed at this man's veterinary skills and his strength and stamina, especially since he is 70 years old. I feel sorry for his poor wife who works in the office every day and probably wanted to retire over 10 years ago. He's quite amazing helping animals and people and having to deal with the good and the bad situations, he seems to take it all in stride. I know there's some controversy surrounding him, but even when you're the best there will always be someone critical of your work, right?
We're currently going through a veterinary experience ourselves as Eco had something wrong with her last week - when she'd get up from sleeping, she'd yelp. Once she yelped as she walked across the carpet. I checked her legs and toes and tummy and couldn't find the source so we took her to our vet. There they performed many of the same tests but determined it was her right hip and then x-rayed her to confirm. Some abnormalities showed up on her x-ray and so we see a specialist tomorrow.
Wouldn't you know it, Eco hasn't had a problem since and has resumed life as a normal 5 year old labrador but we're still going for the consultation with a specialist so we know what to look for and when surgery will be required (possible cruciate ligament tear) - all I can say is "thank goodness for pet insurance!"

I have a confession
Do you know why I haven't been posting much? It's partly because I was trying to get a bunch of items either for sale or for gifts for Christmas but also because I was.... watching TV.
Yup. Bad I know. First we watched the whole first season of Orange is the New Black, and then watched the whole first season of House of Cards - a couple of episodes a night. And now we have a free preview of the Smithsonian Channel and there are some really good shows to watch and sometimes I can't knit or crochet during them so I stop to watch TV.
Do that for a few days in a row, and BOOM guess who's behind and neglecting her computer and project?

Wake up it's Monday!
My alarm goes off and I hit snooze, not wanting to get out of my warm bed yet and still feeling tired. Then my second alarm goes off and I give myself permission to stay in bed - it's Sunday after all and I have nothing planned. Slowly my brain wakes up and reminds that yesterday was Sunday. Yesterday was Sunday? Ah crud, today's Monday and it's time for work.
And then this some comes to mind:
How about you? Were you ready for Monday today?
***
And by the way, did you get the see the commercial at the beginning of this video - the cell phone commercial with Richard Simmons?
(I can't get is smaller so sorry that it hangs off the edge of my blog)
The way he says "detergent" just cracks me up.
Okay that's a better start to the week.

goodbye cable TV
For us, the content on TV has been getting worse and what we found watchable was less and less, but when we happened to catch an episode of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, well - I kid you not- we dropped all our extra cable channels the next morning. We now have "basic cable" and the Video On Demand service which allows us to watch and rent movies and see some TV shows whenever we want with limited commercials.
For those who aren't familiar, Honey Boo Boo became popular after being on the TV show, Toddlers & Tiaras, not only for Alana's (aka Honey Boo Boo Chil) charming personality and amazing confidence but also for her mom's now famous and very controversial Go Go Juice (a half-and-half mixture of Mountain Dew and Red Bull). As well there was controversy over whether this family from Georgia was being laughed at or laughed with, and whether they were in on it or being taken advantage of. However, a few moments of watching, I think you'll see why we decided it just wasn't worth paying for these types of shows any more.
Joel McHale of The Soup calls the mom "a talking thumb"...and now for "Realty Show Clip Time"*
...so what do you think of this show or about cable TV?

mankind is confused
We live in very confusing times - on the one had people are bombarded with silly pranks that win them money or fame or other things from TV or radio or internet, and along with that we really don't know what is what.
For example: the shooting Thursday night in Colorado - a very tragic event indeed. I understand the shooter was dressed in a costume and had what theatre staff was replica guns, sadly that was not the case. And sadly 12 people who were doing nothing but sitting in a theatre lost their lives. Reportedly many people thought that the smoke bomb which started the tragedy was a publicity stunt - and really, how could they think otherwise? Too many times they've been shown that a failure to be curious has cost them the prize. That the furry thing that brushed against them in the dark was a doll head and if they completed the correct sequence of behaviours, they could've won something. Or if they only poked that person on the street they wouldn't have been embarrassed by a hidden camera, etc. By the sounds of it, this 24 year old man didn't look so out of place as he walked into and around the theatre - how could anyone have known what fate lay ahead?
Sure con-men and crooks have existed as long as man, but there was a time when a 'gentleman's handshake' stood for something. It's no wonder that there is such a prevalence of anti-anxiety medication being taken by not only young to old, but also our pets. Society has bombarded everyone and everything with so many inputs - SOUND! COLOUR! MUSIC! VIDEO! FLASHING LIGHTS! and on and on. In general, it seems that most people don't really know how to relax. And they also don't know what's expected of them and surely this is all leading to a very anxious and nervous and stressed out society. And not only do these factors take a toll on the body but they result in other things such as weight gain, or loss of sleep and the negative impact just snowballs from there. The way things are going, it's not looking so good for the humans. Forget that we're overpopulating the planet and depleting it's resources as we (in North America at least) tend to live a very wasteful lifestyle. Forget threats to humanity by nuclear war or germ warfare or the West Nile Virus. No, it almost seems like we've just going to implode ourselves, self destruct as it were - unless the vast majority of us can learn to take responsibility for ourselves, and slow down on the consumption of everything and learn to meditate and learn to be still, and to communicate with one another face to face instead of hiding behind little electronic devices to practically communicate for us.
Forgive me if I sound all 'doom and gloom' but I'm worried for mankind, and perhaps that's what needs to happen as complacency only leads to our downfall, does it not? I remember whenever I had a test in school or college - the times I thought I'd ace it, I didn't and the times I thought I failed, I did much better. So maybe enough people's eyes will soon open and they will take charge or their lives and perhaps we can get a handle on these situations that shouldn't happen at all. But how many wake up calls do we need? Man has come so far in evolving and civilization and knowledge, but yet, in many ways we are more out of touch with our bodies, ourselves, our planet than we have ever have been.
If you had to assign a letter grade to the human race, would would give us?

Friday Funday
Yesterday we had a fun day, it was the end of the first week of Spring Break and so JP and I took the day off work and visited a friend of ours who works on a TV show and had invited us to the studio for a set tour. It was absolutely fascinating! Of course there are confidentiality agreements and all that so I couldn't take photos or tell you more about it but it was so wonderful to see the sets with all the intricate details and the drafted plans and the mock-ups. I wish my eyes and brains could have taken taken in all that I saw like a movie camera so I could replay it again and again.
And after the TV studios we went and toured a sound studio with our brother-in-law. Fascinating as well. They had amazing big rooms away from the rest of the world, with big speakers and big screens - just incredible. I particularly liked the foley room, although several people there expressed that it's really not that fun of a job. I guess it could be physically demanding and frustrating when things just don't go the way you want them to.
Working from home the last several years, I thought they had great places to work at and their co-workers seemed nice. Like most people, they think that working from home is better than their situation. The grass is always greener, isn't it?
Oh and speaking of green - HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!!

Things That Don't Go Together
Last night we went out for dinner at one of our favourite restaurants - a vietnamese place that always has good food. The owner has beent trying out new things to bring people into this locations, and one of the things was a special for game night. Now admittedly Jp and I are not sports fans, and I know many people who are opposed to TVs in restaurants but last night I found out that I really didn't like watching a UFC fight during my meal. Come on people, men bloodying each other up just doesn't seem so appetizing. It almost felt like I was watching a dog fight, as these two guys were all swollen and bloody and at times they seemed to be moving so slow and powerlessly as if it was instinct to keep punching the other guy. It reminded me of those nature programs where they show two insects involved in a 'to the death' type of combat, one might already be dead, or one might be missing his head or some other important part, but the body's reflexes cause it to keep going anyway.
Next time I open the door to a restaurant and see a UFC fight on the TV, I know that I will turn right around and go someplace else. How about you? What do you think of TVs in restaurants, or UFC matches during dinner?

Money Can't Buy you Class - oh my
If you're familiar with the reality TV show "Real Housewives of New York City " then you'll probably get a kick out of this horrible production but don't blame me if you end up saying "Oh my goodness, I really can't believe I watched this whole video"
Did you watch the whole thing?

Dreaming of the Dragon's Den
Lately, I must have been watching too much of the TV show, Dragon's Den because last night in my dreams I was in front of the Dragons pitching my idea. I don't recall what it was, but I believe it was something already invented (in reality). In my dream, my team won because the Dragons liked us, not because of the idea/product.
It would have been nice if I had actually invented something last night.
Once I woke up in the middle of the night because I had a brilliant idea, I blearily and quickly sketched it on some paper on my bedside table and then went to sleep feeling quite smug about my amazing idea. I woke up with excitement and looked at the paper to see what I had written. Big let down! You know what I drew? A stop sign. Bah! Even my brain plays jokes on me.
Have you ever had a great invention in your dreams, only to be let down upon awaking and realizing what it was?

Oscar Envy?
So on Sunday after I had a wonderful breakfast and a good dog walk, and as I was standing in the shower (I have some good thoughts in there), the thought hit me - I wonder how many people who are getting ready for today's Oscar's wish that they had today all to themselves like my simple day instead of having to get pimped and preened for the Oscar's?
Being famous often means one no longer has a say as to how the days are spent and I wondered if perhaps some of the people wished they weren't going. Of course since I've never even been 100 miles near the Oscars so I don't really know what I am talking about. Maybe everyone loves getting their hair and makeup professionally done, and love being dressed by top stylists in the most luxurious dresses, and standing up for hours on end being asked the same questions by the press?
What do you think?
And did you watch the Oscars? A bit lame this year I thought. We need a strong host like Bob Hope in the good old days. The "show" has gone out of it, now it's too rehearsed and stilted don't you think?

Boardwalk Empire
Is anyone watching Boardwalk Empire? I'm very hooked on this series. It's has a sort of Sopranos feel to it, but this series is set in the 1920's. Terrance Winter who wrote the screenplays was also involved in the Sopranos. And Martin Scorsese directed the pilot which cost $18 million dollars. It's includes some real people such as Al Capone and Eddie Cantor (the singer)
We've watched about 6 episodes already. Jp doesn't tend to like period pieces but he's hooked on this show. If you haven't started, check it out, we're getting it on HBO Canada.
Let me know what you think.

How I spent my Saturday mornings as a kid
When I was a kid we had one TV in the living room which, like most households, the kids only had control of on Saturday morning before mom and dad were up. Being the youngest, I had to watch what my brothers watched..... unless I got up earlier than them. When that happened I would be glued to the set to watch my favourite show Run Joe Run

Mad Men in Review
Wasn't Mad Men terrific again last night? Don was ripe as always. But the Glen-Sally thing is a bit scary, what are they leading to - I sure hope he's not going to rape her or something, they certainly have portrayed him as a very odd kid. And Joan was gorgeous as always - loved her at the Christmas party in her 'red dress with the bow on the back - makes [her] look like a Christmas present' - to partially quote Roger Sterling. I loved how she was such a good sport, leading the conga line and swaying her terrific hips.
Poor Freddy Rumsen is going to have a struggle with sobriety in that business, that's for sure, especially after one of his comrades falls after a lunch with Roger. It's interesting that they brought Freddy back, but I still wish Sal would return.
How far do you think Don will get with his nurse neighbour? His poor secretary got the message loud and clear the next morning that's for sure, poor girl - and possibly typed up a resignation letter right then and there.
And don't forget to read Slate Magazine's review of the episode as well.

Back to Mad Men
Yippppeeeeeee!! Season 4 of Mad Men opened last night. Very interesting indeed. "Who is Don Draper?" was the mini-theme of the night. Yes, Don seems to be falling apart a little bit. And I really expected to see Sal (the creative director) at the new firm. Don and Betty's kids seem to be playing a more important role in defining their parents characters. More details of the show here and here. This season starts in 1964 which I'm a little sad about as decor and fashions are changing and I really loved the 50's styles that the show started out with. Styling aside, it was very good episode.
Do you watch it and what do you think of it?
